Areas of Expertise

Canon law, church and state, law and religion, legal ethics and professional responsibility

A Roman Catholic priest in the Order of Friars Minor (Francisans), Father Coughlin is an expert in professional responsibility, canon law, marriage and legal ethics. His scholarly writing has a comparative focus on the understandings of the human person underpinning canon law and Anglo-American law. His experience includes service for the Archdiocese of New York as a judge in the Appeals Tribunal, as vicar of canonical and legal aspects of health care, and as a member of the boards of several Catholic hospitals and educational institutions, as well as a stint in 1998 as a member of the delegation of the Holy See to the United Nations treaty conference that established the International Criminal Court. Father Coughlin was honored in 2000 by the Catholic Brooklyn Lawyer’s guild as “Lawyer of the Year” and the City Council of New York recognized him for outstanding service as a legal practitioner.
