One of the nation’s premier computer architects, Kogge joined the Notre Dame faculty in 1994 after working for 26 years with OBM Corp. During his tenure there, he was the technical leader on a number of major projects in high-performance computing, including the IBM 3838 pipelined vector processor and the IOP, a parallel processor that has been used on National Aeronautic and Space Administration space shuttle missions. His current research areas include massively parallel processing architectures, advanced VLSI and nano technologies and their relationship to computing systems architectures, non von Neumann models of programming and execution, and parallel algorithms and applications and their impact on computer architecture. Kogge also led a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)-sponsored group of industry and technical experts in developing a detailed projection of the technical challenges needed to advance the art of supercomputing to the exascale level.
