Areas of Expertise
Industrial design, design for social betterment
Down directs Notre Dame’s industrial design group and has helped transform this small program into one of the leading industrial design programs in the world, giving it a uniquely social and ethical dimension. He is particularly interested in technologies which benefit disabled, beleaguered and stressed people. These enthusiasms are all the more remarkable for an inventive specialist in the automotive aftermarket whose 1987 design of the first commercially produced, jet-driven, human-powered watercraft—Jet Wave—so fascinated the high end gift specialists of Hammacher Schlemmer that it was featured on the cover of that year’s Spring Catalogue.
