Areas of Expertise
Catholic church, the Pope, the Papacy, history of Christianity, Christian spirituality
There seems to be no aspect of Catholicism, from the most trivial historical detail to the most profound theological doctrine, about which Lawrence Cunningham is not articulate and knowledgeable. His scholarly interests are in the areas of systematic theology and culture, Christian spirituality, and the history of Christian spirituality. Along with numerous articles in encyclopedias and scholarly and popular journals, he is the author or editor of twenty books, including several biographies of ancient and modern saints. Adept at explaining complex and sometimes arcane details of Church history, liturgy, teaching, governance and spiritual life, he is frequently consulted by journalists covering religious topics. He also regularly reviews religious books for Commonweal magazine.
