The percentage of Notre Dame undergraduate students who study abroad consistently is among the highest in the nation, and, as chair of Notre Dame’s strategic planning committee for internationalism, Douthwaite hopes to build on the success. Pushing to emphasize research in study abroad, Douthwaite also is encouraging faculty to teach international summer programs and to cultivate international relationships to result in more exchange programs. Douthwaite’s academic interests focus on 18th and early 19th century French literature, the French Revolution, women’s writing, intersections between literature and science, and Franco-English literary relations. She has received fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, National Endowment for the Humanities and the Lily Endowment.
