Islamic law and politics, Islamic movements in the Middle East, democracy and political reform in Islamic societies, Islam and peace

Before joining the faculty of Notre Dame’s Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, Shahin was associate professor of political science at the American University in Cairo, visiting associate professor in the department of government at Harvard University, and visiting scholar in the Islamic Legal Studies Program at Harvard Law School. His current research focuses on Islam, democracy and the rule of law; Islam and public ethics; Islam and war and peace; and democratic transformation in Egypt and the Middle East. Recent publications include “Political Ascent: Contemporary Islamic Movements in North Africa,” co-editorship of “Struggling over Democracy in the Middle East and North Africa,” and co-authorship of “Islam and Democracy,” published in Arabic. He is the editor-in-chief of “The Oxford Encyclopedia of Islam and Politics” and co-editor of “The Oxford Handbook of Islam and Politics.”
