Areas of Expertise
Petrology, geochemistry, planetary geology
Neal uses petrology and geochemistry to investigate the environment from planetary differentiation to heavy metal pollution. His research is not constrained to the earth and his research projects use samples and geophysics to explore the moon as well as studies of Martian meteorites. His interests also include the evolution of the moon and Mars and the origin of the solar system. Neal is chair of NASA’s Lunar Exploration Analysis Group (LEAG) and also sits on the Planetary Science Subcommittee of the NASA Advisory Council. He also is chair of the readiness assessment team for the JOIDES Resolution, a riserless drilling vessel operated by the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program for scientific exploration of the ocean floor.
