Ethical and philosophical aspects of assisted suicide, bioethics, biomedical ethics, cloning, death and dying, the Pope, the Papacy
A lawyer and theologian who joined the Notre Dame faculty in 1995, Kaveny, studies issues which lie at the intersection of law, morality and religion. Particularly interested in the function of religious discourse in the public square, the role of law as a moral teacher in a pluralistic society, she teaches a popular interdisciplinary course titled “Ethics and Law at the End of Life,” which explores the questions of assisted suicide and euthanasia from the perspectives of theology, philosophy, public policy and law. Kaveny also participates in the national conversation about the relationship of Catholicism and intellectual life, serves on the steering committee of the Catholic Common Ground Initiative founded by the late Cardinal Bernardin, and writes a regular column for Commonweal magazine and its blog.
