British politics, European Union, immigration policy

“The core conflict within Europe is not between Muslims and Christians, but rather between some Muslims and the state,” Messina said in 2006 of growing anti-Muslim feelings in some European countries. A political scientist who studies the politics of ethnicity, race and immigration in Western Europe, Messina is a fellow in Notre Dame’s Kellogg Institute for International Studies and Nanovic Institute for European Studies. His research and teaching interests include British politics, the European Union and immigration policy, and his books include “The Logics and Politics of Post-World War II Migration to Western Europe” and “Race and Party Competition in Britain.” He also is the editor of “West European Immigration and Immigrant Policy in the New Century” and co-editor of “The Migration Reader,” “The Year of the Euro: The Social and Political Import of Europe’s Common Currency,” and “Ethnic and Racial Minorities in the Advanced Industrial Democracies.”
